Peru Reaffirms Promise to
Protect Mountain Environments and Ecosystems |
Peru has begun the process that will
lead to the ratification of a declaration that will establish a set of
guidelines for the sustainable development and the preservation of
ecosystems in the mountains of the world.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Manuel
Rodriguez Cuadros addressed 150 specialists and delegates from 40
different countries meeting in Cusco for the Second World Conference of
the Alliance for Mountains.

Profile of Tourists

The US is the #1 market of potential
tourists not only for Peru, but also for many of the other countries in
Latin America. By the end of 2004, there will have been 55 million
visitors from the US to these areas.

The study, completed by
PromPeru, the
Peruvian Tourism and Promotion Board, recommended that Peru work eagerly
with alliances, especially with Brazil and Argentina. By working with
other countries, Peru will be able to increase tourist visits through
effective marketing approaches. The study also identified potential
tourists from the United States, which are different from the average
American. The average tourist is 48 years old; they are generally married
or are in a live-in relationship (75% versus 53% of the population); have
a high level of education (79% versus 30%); and have a salary that is more
than double the average, explained Carlos Zamorano, the General Director
of

Caral, the Oldest City in the
Americas to Display 5 Pyramids |
Caral, the oldest city in the Americas,
will unveil 5 pyramids, each with a height of 20 meters, and whose
splendor equals that of the pyramids of Egypt. The pyramids will be
presented during the tenth anniversary of their excavation in November.

The pyramids and the surrounding areas
were studied with funding from the
National Geographic Society. Recent
carbon dating has dated the site from 3000-1500 BC. Many flutes, carved
out of pelican bones, have been found at the site along with other items.

Hotel Monasterio and
Miraflores Park Hotel Named in Top Ten |
The magazine
Conde Nast Traveler has named the Hotel Monasterio and the Miraflores Park
Hotel as top ten hotels in South America in its annual Reader’s Choice
Awards edition. The readers of the magazine evaluate properties that they
have visited and it is their votes that determine the rankings. Hotel
Monasterio received 4th place with a percentage of 91.3% and
Miraflores Park Hotel was chosen as number 6 with 81.7%. They are
Orient-Express Hotels properties. The Orient-Express –Copacabana Palace in
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was in 7th place with 78.9%.

Peru to be
the Next Backdrop for Ruta Quetzal |
Peru will be the backdrop for the next
edition of
Ruta Quetzal, revealed its director, Miguel de la Quadra-Salcedo.
He also revealed that the title will be “From the Cities of the Kings to
the Land of the Basque” (“Desde las Ciudades de los Reyes a la Tierra de
los Vascos”). This will be the fourth time that Ruta Quetzal has come to
Peru. The first edition was directed in Peru in 1979 and another in 2001.
