Tiwanaku Exhibit Opens at the Denver Art Museum

The Denver Art Museum opened the Tiwanaku – Ancestors of the Inca exhibit on October 16, 2004. The exhibit will be open until January 23, 2004.

From the coasts of Peru to the harsh highlands of Bolivia to the deserts of Chile, the Tiwanaku people ruled a vast territory for more than a thousand years. They suddenly disappeared and left behind one of South America’s most spectacular archaeological sites. The exhibit allows visitors to unlock the mysteries of this little-known culture through its intricate textiles, bold ceramics, rare gold and silver, and finely carved wood and stone sculptures. All of the items in the collection are amazingly preserved, and reveal a rich culture and a fascinating tradition of sacred rituals and human sacrifices.

The Tiwanaku people decorated their surroundings and themselves with brightly colored textiles like the four cornered hat above, from southern Peru. Forty-five minute tours are available in English on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 12:30 pm, and in Spanish at 1 pm on Saturdays.

On weekends, visitors can learn about Tiwanaku textiles through hands-on activities in the Andean Textiles Art Shop.  For more information about the Tiwanaku exhibit contact the Denver Art Museum at: 720 865-5000 or visit their website at www.denverartmuseum.org.

The Lord of Miracles
Procession Takes Place in Lima

This procession gathers together the largest number of believers in all of South America and dates back to colonial times. It originated when a slave brought over from Angola, drew an image of a black Christ in a hut in the plantation of Pachacamilla, near Lima. The image stayed on the wall despite several attempts to erase it.

The image remains intact on the wall despite an earthquake in 1746 which leveled all of the surrounding buildings. As a result, worship of the image rose to new heights and is today the most widely venerated image in Lima.

The festivities takes place each year from October 18-28. Like every year, a sea of thousands of the faithful dress in purple tunics, sing hymns and accompany the venerated image of the Lord of the Miracles in a 24 hour procession across Lima from the Church of the Nazarene to the Church of Mercy.

During the procession vendors fill the streets selling typical foods and sweets. The bullfight season also takes place during this time in Lima. The bullfights take place in the centuries old Plaza de Acho bullring. Many of the world’s most famous bullfighters come to Lima to compete in the bullfights.
