Alternative Tourism in
Peru |
The promotion of tourism in unknown areas of Peru is having a positive
impact on the people of rural communities. The agrarian communities in the
provinces of Calca, Cusco and Urubamba are benefiting from the support of
the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Swiss
Cooperation Agency for Technical Development.
In the last three years, JICA has invested $373,923.32 to execute the
project in three zones: the Urubamba mountain range, the Apurimac canyon
and Ollantaytambo. Some of the communities that are benefiting from the
development are: Canchacancha, Quishuarani, Cuncani, Yanahuara, San Pedro
de Cachora, Mollepata, Collpapampa, Yanama, Totora, Ollantaytambo,
Cachiccata and Chanccachucco.
The project, named Generation of Employment, seeks to end extreme poverty
by promoting the micro and small businesses in areas that are an
alternative to Cusco, for tourists. An example of the project’s work is
the Las Canteras de Cachiccata restaurant located on a dock. In addition
to the restaurant, tourists are able to take a little-known hike from
Huaran to Ollantaytambo.
|
In accordance with JICA, the goal of the program is to improve the quality
of life for families in extreme poverty and to integrate them into the
business activity of alternative tourist circuits.
This project also helps to preserve the cultural and natural patrimony of
the area. The plan is currently in its last phase and the Center for the
Promotion of Small and Micro Business (Prompyme) is taking over the
project with the goal of sustaining the project and the improvements in
the future. In order to stabilize and implement the advances of the
project, a consulting committee has been instituted. With programs such as
this, visitors are provided with a unique opportunity to learn about Peru,
its people and its culture, while helping communities to sustain tourism
related businesses.
