Hotel Monasterio one of the Five Best in the World

Hotel Monasterio in Cusco was included in the list of the best hotels in the world for its excellent quality, service and facilities. It was ranked #5 in the world by the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World (LHW). The list includes the most luxurious hotels in the world. The hotels are evaluated periodically for excellence and quality of service. Last November, Condé Nast Traveler included the Hotel Monasterio in its list of the best hotels in the world and it is considered the 4th best hotel in Latin America. The rankings are based on surveys from the thousands of readers of the prestigious magazine who travel frequently and are very demanding.

 

 

AeroCondor begins flights
from Lima to Tacna

The Peruvian airline AeroCondor completed its first flight from Lima to the Carlos Ciriani International Airport in Tacna on February 1, 2005. The President of AeroCondor, Carlos Palacin arrived on the inaugural flight for a ceremony in Tacna. The Viceminister of Tourism, Ramiro Salas, said that it is important that Peruvian businesses expand for the development of the country because after mining, tourism is the next industry in need of strengthening in Peru. Projects, such as the expansion of AeroCondor, contribute to the development of Peru. The director of Civil Aeronautics, Roberto Rodriguez, and local authorities also accompanied Palacin on the flight.

Parque Nacional del Manu Named World Patrimony by UNESCO

The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Armando Lecaros, gave the mayor of Manu, Moises Condori, the diploma that certifies the Parque Nacional de Manu as World Patrimony. In a ceremony at the Palacio de Torre Tagle, the Vice Chancellor finalized the formalities of this important designation. As part of the designation, a commission will implement a normative strategy to guarantee the protection of the 10 Peruvian sites that are part of the UNESCO World Patrimony list.

 

79% of Foreign Visitors
Recommend Peru

The Commission for the Promotion of Tourism in Peru, PromPeru, has released a study that shows that 94% of foreign visitors to Peru return home satisfied with their trip. The study also revealed that 79% would recommend Peru as a tourist destination to their friends and family. The report, Profile of the Foreign Tourist (2003), was completed using interviews from a sample of 4,400 tourists who were older than 15 years of age. The level of satisfaction that visitors have with their trips to Peru can be seen as a reason why the number of visits to Peru has increased by more than 25% said Carlos Zamorano, the Director General of PromPeru. The aspects of Peru that tourists like most were found to be: its friendly people (38%), Machu Picchu (26%), the countryside and nature (16%), and its gastronomy (16%). Peru is a destination that is becoming better known and the Peruvian citizens are learning the importance of tourism for them.

The statistics also disclosed that 51% of visitors to Peru have a college degree and that 68% work full time. The average visitor spends $718 in Peru and stays from 8-14 nights.

Peru Becomes China’s Entry Point into South America

Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo and visiting Chinese Vice President Zeng Quighong signed eight trade agreements mostly to boost tourism, but also to increase the trade of goods and to increase oil and gas prospecting.  Peru was designated as an official tourist destination for Chinese citizens. Peru hopes that the agreement will help to increase visits from Chinese tourists from 4,000 to 40,000 annually. Peru is China’s 6th biggest trading partner in South America and hopes to increase trade following on these agreements.

New Additions to Jorge Chavez International Airport Opened

On January 26, 2005, a ceremony marked the opening of the new section of Jorge Chavez Airport in Lima. The new section is part of a project to modernize the airport, which is run by Lima Airport Partners. With the expansion and remodeling of the airline terminal complete, it now has an area of 65,000 square meters. The project has cost $153 million since its inception in 2001. The President of Peru took part in the opening ceremonies and said that with this investment Jorge Chavez Airport is now a modern airport that can rival those of the large cities of the world. He also said that it has been converted into an important gateway into South America for the rest of the world.
